How a Garage Cleanout Works: What to Expect from Start to Finish
It starts innocently enough. You put a few boxes in the garage "temporarily." Then the holiday decorations. Then the kids' old bikes. Then the broken treadmill. Then the furniture you replaced but couldn't bring yourself to throw away. Fast forward a few years and you can't park your car in your own garage — and you're not even sure what's back there anymore.
Sound familiar? You're not alone. The garage is the #1 area people call us to clean out. Here's exactly what the process looks like from start to finish.
Step 1: The Call
You call us at 216-290-2221 or submit a form on our website. We'll ask a few questions:
- How full is the garage? (Quarter, half, completely packed?)
- What's in there? (Furniture, boxes, tools, appliances, yard equipment?)
- Anything especially heavy or bulky? (Workbench, safe, riding mower?)
- When do you need it done?
Sending photos is the fastest way to get an accurate estimate. Take a photo from the garage door looking in, and a couple of close-ups of the contents.
Step 2: The Estimate
Based on your description and photos, we give you a price range. When our crew arrives, they'll confirm the exact price before any work begins. You approve it or walk away — no obligation.
Pricing is based primarily on volume (how much truck space your stuff fills). A typical garage cleanout runs anywhere from a quarter truck to a full truck, depending on how packed things are.
Step 3: The Sort
Before we start throwing things on the truck, we do a quick walkthrough with you:
- What's definitely going? — The broken stuff, the junk, the things you never want to see again
- What are you keeping? — We'll move these to a safe spot so they don't accidentally end up on the truck
- Anything to donate? — Working items in decent condition can be donated instead of dumped
This step takes 5-10 minutes and prevents any "wait, not that!" moments.
Step 4: The Cleanout
Now the fun part (for us, anyway). Our crew gets to work:
- We start at the front and work toward the back
- Heavy items get team-lifted — we have the muscle and the technique
- Awkward items (long lumber, old doors, that random canoe) get handled with care to avoid damage to your garage walls and door
- We sweep up as we go so you're not left with a dirty floor
Most garage cleanouts take 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on volume and how tightly things are packed.
Step 5: The Finish
When we're done, you've got your garage back. We leave it broom-clean — swept floor, no debris left behind. You can actually see the back wall for the first time in years.
Everything on the truck gets sorted at our next stop:
- Usable items → local charities and donation centers
- Metals → scrap recycling
- Electronics → certified e-waste recyclers
- Everything else → licensed disposal facility
Common Garage Cleanout Items
We've seen it all, but the most common items include:
- Old furniture (couches, tables, chairs, dressers)
- Boxes of who-knows-what
- Broken exercise equipment
- Old appliances (extra fridge, window AC units)
- Yard tools and equipment
- Kids' toys, bikes, and sports equipment
- Paint cans (we can take dried/hardened paint — not liquid)
- Holiday decorations you'll never use again
- That pile of wood scraps from a project three years ago
