What Happens to Your Junk After We Haul It Away?
One of the most common questions we get is: "Where does all this stuff actually go?" It's a fair question. At Sergeant Junk, we take responsible disposal seriously. Here's what happens after we load your items onto our truck.
Step 1: Sorting on the Truck
As we load items, our crew is already sorting. Furniture that's still in good shape goes to one area. Scrap metal goes to another. Electronics are kept separate. This sorting on-site means we can efficiently route items to their next destination instead of dumping everything in one place.
Step 2: Donations
Usable furniture, clothing, household goods, and working appliances are donated to local Cleveland-area charities, thrift stores, and community organizations. We work with several partners who accept regular donations. That couch you're tired of? It might become someone's first piece of furniture in their new apartment.
Step 3: Recycling
We recycle as much as possible:
- Metals — Appliances, swing sets, bed frames, and scrap metal go to local scrap recycling facilities
- Electronics — TVs, computers, monitors, and other e-waste go to certified e-waste recyclers
- Wood — Clean lumber and wood waste goes to wood recycling facilities
- Cardboard & Paper — Boxed items and paper goods are recycled
- Concrete & Brick — Construction materials are taken to aggregate recyclers
Step 4: Responsible Disposal
Items that can't be donated or recycled — broken furniture, mattresses, mixed waste — go to licensed disposal facilities. We never illegally dump, and we always use licensed, permitted facilities.
The Numbers
We estimate that over 60% of the items we collect are diverted from landfills through donation and recycling. We're always working to improve that number by finding new recycling partners and donation outlets in the Cleveland area.
