What to Throw Out When Moving: A Room-by-Room Decluttering Guide
Moving is stressful enough without packing and hauling stuff you don't even want anymore. Every box you pack, move, and unpack costs you time and money — whether you're hiring movers or doing it yourself. The smartest thing you can do before a move is ruthlessly declutter. Here's a room-by-room guide to help you decide what makes the cut.
The Golden Rule
Before we get into specifics, here's the filter to run everything through:
"Would I buy this again if I didn't already own it?"
If the answer is no, it doesn't deserve a spot in your new home. You're paying to move it — in time, effort, or money. Make it earn its place.
Living Room
Toss or donate:
- Furniture that's worn, stained, sagging, or doesn't fit your new space
- Old DVDs, CDs, and Blu-rays you'll never watch again (everything's streaming now)
- Books you've read and won't re-read (donate to the library)
- Decorations you're tired of looking at
- Old remotes for devices you don't own anymore
- Magazines and newspapers
- Board games with missing pieces
Kitchen
Toss or donate:
- Mismatched containers without lids (we all have that cabinet)
- Specialty gadgets used once — the bread maker, the juicer, the fondue set
- Chipped plates, mugs, and glasses
- Expired food, spices, and condiments (check those dates)
- Old cookbooks you've never opened (you use your phone anyway)
- Extra sets of utensils and serving ware you never use
- The junk drawer contents — be honest, most of it is junk
Bedrooms
Toss or donate:
- Clothes you haven't worn in a year — if you didn't reach for it in four seasons, you won't miss it
- Old mattresses and pillows — moving is a great reason to upgrade
- Broken furniture or furniture that doesn't fit the new space
- Old bedding and linens that are stained, pilled, or thin
- Shoes that hurt your feet (you're never going to "break them in")
Bathroom
Toss:
- Expired medications (take them to a pharmacy for proper disposal)
- Old cosmetics and makeup (most have a 6-12 month shelf life once opened)
- Nearly-empty bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and products
- Ratty towels and washcloths
- That collection of hotel toiletries you'll never use
Garage / Basement / Attic
This is where the big purge happens. These spaces become dumping grounds for things we don't want to deal with. Be aggressive here:
- Broken tools and equipment — if it's been broken for a year, you're not fixing it
- Old paint cans — dried out paint is trash. Liquid paint needs hazardous waste disposal
- Exercise equipment that's become a clothes rack
- Boxes you haven't opened since your last move — if you didn't need it in this home, you won't need it in the next one
- Holiday decorations you skip every year
- Old sports equipment the kids outgrew
- Spare parts and hardware for things you no longer own
Home Office
Toss or shred:
- Old paperwork — you only need 7 years of tax records. Shred the rest
- Old electronics — that drawer of charging cables for phones you don't have
- Old computers, printers, and monitors — recycle these (don't trash them)
- Office supplies you'll never use (when's the last time you used a fax cover sheet?)
The "Maybe" Pile Problem
Everyone creates a "maybe" pile. Here's how to handle it: put it in a box, seal it, write today's date on it, and put it in storage at your new place. If you haven't opened it in 6 months, get rid of it without opening it. You clearly didn't need it.
What to Do with Everything You're Getting Rid Of
- Sell it — Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or a garage sale for items with value
- Donate it — Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore for usable items
- Recycle it — Electronics, metals, and specific materials
- Call Sergeant Junk — For everything else. We haul it all in one trip: furniture, appliances, boxes, bags, electronics, yard waste, and whatever else you've decided to leave behind
The Bottom Line
Moving is expensive. Every item you get rid of before the move saves you money — less packing material, less truck space, less time loading and unloading, and less unpacking at the new place. Be ruthless. Your future self will thank you.
